November 9, 2012
On September 17, 1787, anxious citizens gathered outside Independence Hall to learn what had been produced behind closed doors. Founding Father James McHenry overheard a Mrs. Powell ask Benjamin Franklin, “Well Doctor, what have we got--a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin replied, “A republic if you can keep it.”
After defending our Republic for 225 years, the citizens of the United States of America answered Dr. Franklin’s question on November 6, 2012 when they voted to throw our Republic away. A combination of progressive-liberals, Communists, Socialists, Islamist, and “have not’s,” supported by the media, managed to gloss over President Obama’s failures and convinced a majority of single issue voters to reelect Obama. The election is over. President Obama and his followers won. America in now set on course that follows Europe toward Socialism, dhimmitude, and economic suicide -- a course that may be irreversible.
Why did the majority of America’s citizens chose this path? There are many reasons, all of them self imposed, and some of which I will discuss.
First: Education. American’s have allowed patriotism to be expunged from our educational system. Liberal apologists have rewritten our history in our text books. Our children have been taught that America is bad, has done terrible, shameful things: all the good things America has done minimized. The school day no longer begins with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance.
Second: The concept of self reliance has been replaced by entitlement. A very large percentage of the voting public feels it is the government’s responsibility to take care of them, the “have not’s.” Scottish history professor Alexander Tyler, it is commonly believed, said it best,
“A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years.”
The United States of America is 225 years old.
Third: The Constitution no longer seems to be important. It is a living document and thus subject to interpretation by the courts and the president. The foundation of our liberty has been eroded.
Fourth: The volunteer military. When the requirement for military service was ended, America’s sense of honor, patriotism, sacrifice, and tradition began to fade away. Today, a very small percentage of our citizens volunteer to protect our liberty. These patriotic men and women are not appreciated by a large percentage of our citizens, and there are few veterans elected to Congress. Neither Mitt Romney or Barack Obama served in the military. America began to lose its way when the professional military replaced the draft. Beginning with Vietnam, America has engaged in wars that caused no hardship to the public. Hardship and struggle builds bonds, pride in accomplishment, and patriotism. The very things we have lost. One of my friends, a retired major general who earned three Blue Badges, Combat Infantry Badges, in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, says it best, “Our military is at war and our citizens are at the mall.” The American public’s reaction to Benghazi illustrates his message. Our president, secretary of state, secretary of defense, and the director of the CIA stood by doing nothing. After repeated calls for help American citizens and our ambassador were abandoned, left to be murdered. College students interviewed at an Obama rally on an Ohio college campus did not know what had happened, had never heard of Benghazi, and didn’t appear to care. Men and women who volunteer to serve are considered “assets” -- expendable assets -- by our current leaders.
Fifth: The news media, a misnomer since there is no longer a true news media. Slanted reporting, hiding inconvenient facts, and lying are the accepted norm. Instead of seeking the truth, our citizens select a news outlet that says what they want to hear. FOX makes an attempt at being “fair and balanced,” but that is all it is, an attempt. The concept of ethics in journalism has been lost.
Sixth: The concept of political correctness and social justice. To be politically correct one must say what the group deems acceptable. Liberty means the freedom to express your opinion, even if you are the only person with such an opinion. Thus, a politically correct person must also believe in a “living Constitution” which in reality means no Constitution. Social justice means taking from the “haves” and giving to the “have not’s.” Eventually everyone, with the exception of the elite, will become a “have not.” As the government runs out of “haves” to tax, it borrows and prints money. Finally, the system implodes and a dictator takes over.
I fear that the demise of our Republic draws near, and its tombstone’s epitaph will read, “Hear lies a politically correct republic.”
