Iranian Backed Terrorists Attack
US, French Consulates in Iraq

FrontPageMag.com
All those Sunni Islamists running around torching US consulates and embassies must have made Tehran jealous.

As Ahmadinejad came to New York and the locals chuckled at his harmless provincialism in calling for the destruction of Israel, Iranian backed terrorists have hit the US consulate in Kirkuk and the French consulate in Nassiriya.

The US consulate in Iraq’s Northern city of Kirkuk was targeted by rocket attacks, a source in Kirkuk police announced on Tuesday. Alsumaria news agency quoted a informed source in the Kirkuk police department as saying that two Katyusha rockets struck the US consulate in the province.

A car bomb exploded outside the French consulate building in the Iraqi city of Nassiriya on Sunday, wounding at least two people, part of a wave of nine attacks across the country, police said.

Nassiriya is Shiite and despite some Al Qaeda attacks, it’s doubtful that Al Qaeda in Iraq would need to go to a Shiite city to hit a foreign target.

Kirkuk is Kurdish, but it has a heavy presence of Shiites thanks to Saddam’s resettlement project and has been a source of Iranian Revolutionary Guard activity. The shelling of targets in Kirkuk with Katyusha rockets is not new, but carries a particular resonance right now. Choosing the US and French consulates also sends a rather clear Islamist message.

Shiites have also been the target of attacks in Kirkuk and Nassiriya so Sunni Islamists cannot be ruled out as the source of the attacks, but Sunni Islamists have easier places to hit foreign targets.
