The Psychological Component in the Iranian Threat
Yonatan Silverman
September 19, 2012
“Look, we are facing a regime that threatens the annihilation of the Jewish state. It calls for genocide; it comes out with the worst anti-Semitic statements in half a century; it threatens to dominate the entire world. The world. Not merely the Middle East, North Africa or Europe, but the world. It’s building nuclear weapons to that effect, okay.” -- Prime Minister Netanyahu

The doctrine of “fight or flight” comes into play when a person is faced with a threat to his life. In an instant he must decide whether to try to fight with the adversary who wants to kill him and hopefully defeat him and get away with his life. Or he has the choice to run away and secure his life by putting distance between himself and the attacker.

The situation is different for a country whose existence is threatened by an enemy invader. A country does not have the option of flight. It has no place to run. So all a country threatened with invasion and occupation can do is fight, or surrender.

In Iran’s case however, this enemy country is not threatening anyone with invasion or occupation. The threat Iran is creating with great deceit and subterfuge is a nuclear weapon. A weapon of mass destruction in the hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a devastating prospect, precisely because the country is ruled by Islam, and its motivation to pursue jihad and bring about Islamic rule in the world are enough to make anyone fear the possibility that a nuclear weapon in Iran’s hands would be used for nothing but offensive and destructive purposes against the infidel world.

This is the rationale behind the efforts of the Western powers to impose economic sanctions on the Islamic rogue republic. This is also what motivated the West’s struggle to organize negotiations with Iran over the last period. Iran has built nuclear reactors which they claim are for the purpose of nuclear energy production. But at the same time, despite great deceit and subterfuge, everyone knows Iran has proceeded headlong in installing uranium enrichment centrifuges in great numbers. The proliferation of the centrifuges is what gives away Iran’s true objective. They have already enriched more than enough uranium for energy purposes. Iran’s frantic race to enrich even more uranium now can only be for the purpose of producing fissionable material for a bomb.

The civilized world needs to fear an Iranian nuclear bomb and take measures to interdict Iran’s acquiring nuclear arms precisely because Iran is an Islamic terror state,

Since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979, Iran views terrorism as a legitimate means to further its ideological and strategic aims - Exporting the Revolution. Assisting Islamic terror groups and organizations worldwide, especially in the Middle East. Attacking Israel and attempting to sabotage the political process. Destabilizing the regimes of the more pragmatic Arab countries. Eliminating the Iranian regime’s opposition.

Since the “Madrid Conference” in October 1991, Iran has been active in attempting to disrupt the peace process in the Middle East, which threatens to increase Iran's political isolation in the region, to limit its influence and interests in Lebanon. This opposition lead Iran to strengthen its ties with those Palestinian organizations that oppose the peace process, such as The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), Hamas and the various “Fronts”. Iran hoped that terrorist attacks carried out by the Palestinian organizations, together with those perpetrated by Hizballah, would hamper the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations and undermine Yasser Arafat’s position. This goal concurs with the basic Iranian hostility towards Israel that originates from the regime’s Islamic religious ideology. Iran refuses to recognize Israel’s existence, and refers to Israel as “the occupation regime of al Quds”, and constantly calls for the destruction of Israel.

So while the ugly consequences of an Iranian nuclear weapon are things the entire civilized world wants to prevent, the consequences for Israel are particularly acute, particularly because the insane Iranian regime is oriented to the violent and destructive doctrines of islam, and these doctrines focus particularly on annihilation of the Jewish people.

Recently, a Pakistani religious leader, Pirzada Muhammad Raza Saqib Mustafai, said: "When the Jews are wiped out ... the sun of peace [will] begin to rise on the entire world." The same preaching is routinely done not only by clerics, but by politicians -- in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and elsewhere. This is not just Ahmedinijad; it is at the heart of Islamic theology that world peace will be established only when all the Jews are wiped from the earth. But few people in Western media are alarmed by this kind of rhetoric or care to expose this dreadful dark side of Islam's obsession with Jew-hatred. Why Muslims Must Hate Jews By Nonie Darwish

Although the civilized world was correct in imposing biting economic sanctions on Iran as a tactic to force the insane Islamic regime to comply with the civilized demand that it not take measures to acquire nuclear weapons, the sanctions have only affected Iran’s economy, not its jihad desire for nuclear weapons. Uranium enrichment continues and even expands day by day and Iran is essentially thumbing its Islamic nose at the infidel world and will do nothing to curb its nuclear weapon ambitions.

The same was the result from negotiations with the Iranians. Participating in the negotiations as they did simply bought time for the Islamic rogue regime. There was never any good faith on Iran’s part to change any element of their nuclear bomb project. Iran has no intention of backing down on its objectives.

In parallel with sanctions and negotiations world leaders constantly say that all options are on the table, which is a euphemism for military action against Iran for the purpose of shocking them and forcing them to adhere to the demands of the civilized world and stop their nuclear weapons program. But until now the military option against Iran is nothing but talk.

Why is the West reserved about attacking Iran militarily and forcing this outlaw Islamic regime to halt its efforts to acquire nuclear weapons? Why doesn’t the US in particular as leader of the free world take the bull by the horns and intervene militarily in Iran for the purpose of forcing Iran to give up its jihad nuclear arms ambitions?

The answer is psychological. On one hand personal psychology plays a role in preventing the US from taking military action, and this is the personal psychology of president Obama. He isn’t adapted to cope with a military strike against Iran and he cannot even talk about it. Everyone knows sanctions and negotiations have failed to produce results, but for his part Obama will not take further action. Psychology is also a factor in the inaction of the western powers. Iranian terrorism, and underlying Islamic arrogance and deceit have intimidated the western powers. While the problem in the US is definitely Obama and his ill adapted character, for the western powers the problem is unfortunately fear of Iran, which the regime has obviously cultivated through its violence and Islamic triumphalism. The western powers cannot collect themselves psychologically for a military offensive against Iran.

Collective psychology is also a factor in the US. According to recent surveys a very large percentage of the US population rejects attacking Iran militarily or joining in such an attack with Israel. Apparently the US does not want to get involved in any more wars. The severity and urgency of the Iranian nuclear threat does not seem to matter.

There is of course a very big gap between the Iranian nuclear threat against the world at large and against Israel in particular. Iran’s insane leaders lose no opportunity to spout hate and call for destruction of the Jewish state. A nuclear weapon would give the Iranian madmen the opportunity they want. So while psychology may be what prevents the US and the Western powers from organizing to attack Iran, Israel cannot afford to mess with psychology. The clear and present danger is that a nuclear armed Iran would act immediately to wipe Israel off the map. Since sanctions and negotiations did nothing to change the picture, military action is the only answer and considering conditions and mentalities in the rest of the world, Israel is going to be forced to undertake military action alone.

There is a parallel here to the Nazi invasion of the Rhineland in 1936. According to Winston Churchill: “If the French government had mobilized the French Army with its nearly hundred divisions there is no doubt that Hitler would have been compelled by his own General Staff to withdraw and a check would have been given to his pretentions which might well have proved fatal to his rule. England remained completely inert and paralysed and thus lost irretrievably the last chance of arresting Hitler’s ambitions without a serious war,..”

Among other things, Churchill stresses that if only France had attacked Hitler in the Rhineland in the beginning, and if only England had joined in, they would have blackened Hitler’s eye, and this could have proven instrumental in avoiding the horrors of World War II. The same holds true today in the case of Iran’s nuclear bomb ambitions. If a proper military effort isn’t organized to blacken the eye of the Islamic terrorist death cult Ayatollahs and stop them from producing jihad nuclear weapons an even worse war with Iran could develop later. As things look now, Israel will stand alone in this critical mission.
