An anti-President Obama documentary burned up the box office this weekend, becoming the highest-grossing new film and coming in eighth overall out of all films showing.

"2016: Obama's America" grossed $6.3 million in a limited theater release. Its take made it the highest grossing conservative political documentary of all time and the sixth biggest political documentary of all time, behind features by liberal favorites Michael Moore and Al Gore, according to Deadline Hollywood, an industry blog.

The film was expanded nationwide this weekend, timed to coincide with the beginning of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. It's playing at several locations throughout the city.

It's also been heavily promoted on conservative talk radio and Rush Limbaugh has been a huge advocate for it.

Hollywood trade publication the Wrap called it a "surprising box office success."

The documentary is based on author Dinesh D’Souza’s bestselling book The Roots Of Obama’s Rage and examines where America will be in 2016. It argues that Obama's "politics come from Third World influences — from his father in Kenya and his early years spent with his mother in Indonesia," according to a review in the Los Angeles Times.

That upbringing, D'Souza says, explains Obama's "anticolonialist approach, one that would favor the rise of the Third World (or, as D'Souza labels it, the United States of Islam), greatly reduce Israel's influence and cede the U.S.' role as a superpower."
